Ellagic Acid

The details
Ellagic acid is an antioxidant found in pomegranates, raspberries, strawberries, and nuts. It mainly acts as a brightening agent and antioxidant in cosmetics. By interrupting the enzyme that kicks off melanin production (tyrosinase), it slows down how much new pigment your skin makes. It's antioxidant side helps by neutralizing UV-generated reactive oxygen species and also activates the skin's own defense pathway. Studies show interesting results: It's also worth nothing that none of these studies reported adverse effects from this ingredient. You'll often see this ingredient paired with specific solvents or encapsulated because it is poorly water soluble (this limits bioavailability).
